“Time Axis” is a small memorial park located at the corner of Baoding Road and Kunming Road. It reveals three layers of time: Artificial Time, Absolute Time and Historical Time.

Artificial Time is the clock tower. The tower itself acts as a sundial that represents Absolute Time. Three low walls pointing towards historical buildings with collective memory in the neighborhood reflect Historical time.

The design translates the definition of these three layers of time into a built environment. It provides a resting place for residents and responds to the unique history of the North Bund District in Shanghai.

Etched on top of the low walls are significant moments of the historical buildings that the walls point towards. Below are the selected dates:

1903.5.18 Tilanqiao Prison (first modernized prison in China) was put into use.
1933.11.20 The Ward Police Hospital (predecessor of Hospital of Integrated Medicine) was built.
1943.2.18 The Residence for Stateless Refugees (predecessor of Jewish Refugees Museum) was established by the then Japanese government.

Tectonic details:
No single brick was cut for the construction of the project. Full bricks were used with adjustment in mortar joints to create maximum varieties of patterns and textures.
