Concept:

“The Writing of Walls”

The project called for the design of showroom and office space for a LED lighting and research company. The showroom is roughly 120sm while the office took up about 400sm.

LED lighting technology has been widely applied nowadays and we were interested in exploring the meaning of fabrications and technology through the design for this young, and fast growing company.

The predominant features of the “Lighting Showroom” were composed of a curvilinear walls and rectilinear wall opposing each other. The undulating wall acts as eye-level display shelves, cloth hanging display, recline seating, benches, bar top etc. This multi-purpose wall helps the client to illustrate the applications of their different LED lighting products under different commercial scenarios. It is almost a common practice nowadays that the fabrications and generation of the curve surfaces was done through 3-D computer modeling and the 1 to 1 fabrications process of CNC machine. The rectilinear wall on the opposite side of the Showroom, which houses the reception area, conference rooms and a lighting comparison showcase unit, provides a stark contrast to the undulating wall.

Upon close inspection, one could find that the shelving was actually made of bent laminated plywood, a design details that we would like to play particular homage to Charles and Ray Eames who perfected this craft (or fabrication technology) through their iconic LCW and HCW chair series. We are convinced that craftsmanship still plays a significant part in our role as designers. LED lighting strips were slotted in to the underside of these bent plywood shelves to highlight the linearity and characteristics of the client’s product.

The overall design of the office area takes on a young, energetic and vibrant atmosphere for the newly found company.
