A vacation house is designed in the suburb of Shunde, China for the display of the owner’s collection of Bruce Lee memorabilia. Shunde is also the ancestral home of Bruce Lee.

The trapezoidal site tapers out from west to east totaling 670 square meters. There is a sharp drop of over 9 meters along the southern edge of the site, forming a natural boundary. Beyond this boundary are three-storey vernacular houses while the north side of the site faces back to a tranquil residential community.

The massing of the house calls for distinctive volumes and shapes to celebrate the divided yet connective nature of the project: vacation home and display gallery.

The elongated gallery space provides a visual anchor to define the edge of this community with a private garden. Window openings are carefully placed along this telescopic gallery to allow for indirect ambient natural lights. The gallery tapers down to 600mm in width with an iconic quote cast into a 8-meter tall concrete wall from Bruce Lee: “Being no rule is the Rule; Being no limit is the Limit.” On the second floor there is a melancholic balcony for personal reflection.

The connecting volume houses the master bedroom which overlooks the double height living room. From the living room there is a direct access to the garden. The openness of this garden is balanced by a sense of enclosure and privacy from the elongated concrete mass. It's a visual buffer and back-drop for the garden and the community.
